What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is based on
the belief that the human body has
an innate healing ability.
Naturopathic doctors (NDs) teach
their patients to use diet,
exercise, lifestyle changes and
cutting edge natural therapies to
enhance their bodies’ ability to
ward off and combat disease.
Naturopathic physicians craft
comprehensive treatment plans that
blend the best of modern medical
science and traditional natural
medical approaches to not only treat
disease, but to also restore health. |
|
What is a Naturopathic Doctor?
Naturopathic physicians combine the
wisdom of nature with the rigors of
modern science. Steeped in
traditional healing methods,
principles and practices,
naturopathic medicine focuses on
holistic, proactive prevention and
comprehensive diagnosis and
treatment. By using protocols that
minimize the risk of harm,
naturopathic physicians help
facilitate the body’s inherent
ability to restore and maintain
optimal health. It is the
naturopathic physician’s role to
identify and remove barriers to good
health by helping to create a
healing internal and external
environment.

The
Term "Nutraceutical"
was coined from "nutrition" and
"pharmaceutical" in 1989 by Stephen
DeFelice, MD, founder and chairman
of the Foundation for Innovation in
Medicine (FIM), Cranford, NJ.
According to DeFelice, nutraceutical
can be defined as, "a food (or part
of a food) that provides medical or
health benefits, including the
prevention and/or treatment of a
disease." However, the term
nutraceutical as commonly used in
marketing has no regulatory
definition (an excerpt from the June

Holistic Health
is
actually an approach to life. Rather
than focusing on illness or specific
parts of the body, this ancient
approach to health considers the
whole person and how he or she
interacts with his or her
environment. It emphasizes the
connection of mind, body, and
spirit. The goal is to achieve
maximum well-being, where everything
is functioning the very best that is
possible. With Holistic Health
people accept responsibility for
their own level of well-being, and
everyday choices are used to take
charge of one's own health. This
definition and description is
derived from the Illustrated
Encyclopedia of Body-Mind
Disciplines,
published by The Rosen Publishing
Group in 1999

Dietetics/Nutrition
is the science concerned
with the relationship between foods
and human health. The focus is on
nutrients in food, their
actions/interactions and the balance
of health, disease, socioeconomic,
cultural, and psychological factors.
This field requires the application
of biochemistry, physiology, social
sciences and physical sciences
toward the achievement of optimal
human health. The Board of
Registration of
Dietitians/Nutritionists grants
licenses to qualified individuals
who comply with the requirements of
the statute. The Board monitors
licensees to insure that the
services provided are in accordance
with the Massachusetts General Laws
and Board rules and regulations. The
Board also insures that licensees
have complied with continuing
professional education requirements
necessary to maintain current
knowledge and renew their license.
About
Dietitians/Nutritionists
possess specialized knowledge of the
science of dietetics/nutrition,
human nutrition, nutrition education
or public health education. Course
work is heavily science-based
including chemistry, biology and
biochemistry, along with food and
nutritional sciences. Some states
require or recommend Licensees and
the completion of specific
dietetics/nutrition coursework in
addition to related management and
psychology courses. Professional
work experience is necessary and
some state statutes require that
Licensees also demonstrate
successful completion of an approved
comprehensive examination. |

Holistic Health
Practitioner:
It's important to note that
there is a difference between a
holistic health practitioner and a
holistic doctor. When we speak of a
doctor we are usually referring to a
medical doctor who practices
holistic medicine.
If you're searching for a holistic
doctor then you should look for
someone who has a medical degree and
yet approaches health and disease
with a holistic philosophy.
It's usually a good idea for anyone
living with a chronic illness,
disease or condition that uses
holistic health practitioners to
also have a holistic doctor. There
are certain aspects of disease and
illness management that require the
skill of a medical doctor. So
finding a holistic doctor is the
perfect route. You can then
supplement, compliment and extend
your health care plan by including
other practitioners to cover other
bases you desire to explore.
A holistic health practitioner may
or may not be a medical doctor, but
there are many other health care
professionals from a variety walks
of life that fall into this category
as well.
Many people are beginning to
recognize the interconnection of
body, mind and spirit and the
importance of treating the whole
person by adopting a holistic
approach rather than merely treating
separate body parts. They are
beginning to see the value in
treating health conditions with
natural, alternative and
preventative methods versus
traditional approaches which rely
mostly on treating symptoms.
Most practitioners tend to
specialize in a specific area or
maybe several areas. For example an
acupuncturist may offer acupuncture
as well as massage and nutritional
counseling. It's hard to find
someone who does it all, so you
usually end up with several
different holistic health
practitioners.
A holistic health
practitioner may be any of the
following:
Dentist
Homeopath
Massage Therapist
Osteopath
Acupuncturist |
Mental
Health Counselor
Psychologist
Naturopath
Nutritionist
Educators |
Yoga
Educator
Herbalist
Aromatherapy
CranioSacral Therapist
Chiropractor |
Nurses
Health Counselors
Orthomolecular
Physicians
*other.... |
*There are
even holistic practitioners for
caring for your dog and cat, and
practitioners who incorporate home
care services among other effective
holistic regiments and strategies.
Although there is a wide variety of
practitioners and treatment
modalities, they all share a common
belief and operate under the basic
premise of holistic health. They
focus on aspects such as life style
changes, diet, exercise, and
nutrition as well as a variety of
other alternative health options.
